Does an output-stationary systolic array beat a MAC-lane engine for a tiny quantised MLP?

research/chip-systolic

R x C output-stationary systolic MLP engine, bit- and cycle-exact against NumPy; at matched MACs it loses to chip-accel's MAC lanes on cells-times-cycles (about 1.6x to 1.8x) but wins on latency (negative, stylised, generic-gate counts).

What it found

An R×C systolic-array generator for the 8-8-4 integer MLP, simulated in Icarus Verilog and matched bit for bit and cycle for cycle against an integer NumPy reference in all 12 configurations (batch of 4). Against the MAC-lane engine of chip-accel at 4, 6 and 8 bits, synthesised with the same Yosys generic-gate script, the array has 1.6× to 1.8× more cells×cycles at its best shape (a negative result), but lower latency: 40 cycles for 4×8 against 80 for 8 MAC lanes, at about 3.9× the cells at 4 bits. Stylised: fan-in 8, one network, gate counts rather than area, no clock, power or layout.
