Chile: SII hands you the invoice numbers, and the buyer has eight days

In Chile, per the guides read, a tax document is a DTE: XML signed with a certificate recognised by the tax authority (SII) and numbered from a range of folios the SII authorised for that document type. A received invoice counts as accepted if nobody claims against it in eight days. Below: how it works as vendor guides and SII documents report it, where sources disagree, and a local check of a RUT’s check digit.

How it works (as vendor guides report it)

StepWhat happens
Get foliosAn authorised signatory authenticates on the SII site with a digital certificate and requests a range of folios for one document type. The SII returns a CAF (código de autorización de folios) with a key pair used to generate and verify the electronic stamp.
IssueEach document is numbered with a unique folio and signed in full, stamp included. The documents include invoices, sales receipts (boletas), and a purchase invoice (factura de compra) that the SII’s free system also offers.
SendThe issuer sends the DTE to the SII, which receives it and checks it; the buyer gets the document too.
Accept or claimThe buyer may accept or claim the invoice within 8 calendar days counted from when the SII received it. The SII says that after 8 days with no acceptance and no claim, the invoice is presumed accepted.

Where it is unsettled: how long a CAF stays valid (one source says 6 months from the date the CAF was authorised for CAFs authorised since 1 July 2018, another says 6 months from when the folios were requested), the date e-invoicing became mandatory for every taxpayer (one source says 2018; another names Law 20,727 as the base), and the 8-day rule’s origin (a vendor blog credits Law 20,956 of October 2016; one vendor page says 7 days, the SII says 8). These are SII PDFs and vendor blogs read through search excerpts, not the laws. No penalty is stated because none was read. A summary, not tax advice.

Check a RUT

Tests the shape (up to eight digits, a hyphen and a check digit that is 0 to 9 or K) and the check digit. It does not look anything up, so it cannot say whether the RUT is registered or belongs to the name on the invoice. Dots and spaces are ignored. A single wrong digit is never missed, because the weights (2 to 7) are never a multiple of 11, and neither were swapped neighbouring digits in a sample (0 of 12,667 swaps on 2,000 sample company RUTs).

The sample is a valid RUT I know of. The rule (mod 11, weights 2 to 7 repeating from the right, 11 gives 0 and 10 gives K) reproduces four RUTs I know, including the SII’s own (60.805.000-0); it was not read from the SII’s specification.

What this checker does and does not cover

The main checker reads UBL, CII and Factur-X and applies EN 16931 and Peppol rules. It does not read the DTE XML (the SII’s own schema), cannot verify a CAF, stamp or signature, and has no SII catalogues. Treat the RUT test here as a typo catch only.

Test a file before you send it

For a European or Peppol invoice, open the checker, drop your XML and read the findings, each with a rule ID and a fix (the rule reference). No account, nothing uploaded. No invoice yet? The e-invoice creator turns a form into UBL or CII XML and checks it. Other countries: all side by side Mexico Brazil Colombia Japan Spain.

Common questions

What is a DTE in Chile?

A DTE (documento tributario electrónico) is Chile’s electronic tax document: XML numbered with a folio from a range the tax authority (SII) authorised for that document type, and signed with a certificate recognised by the SII, stamp included. Invoices, sales receipts and purchase invoices are among them. This is a summary from SII documents and vendor guides, not advice; confirm with the SII or your accountant.

What is a CAF?

The código de autorización de folios: what the SII returns when an authorised signatory requests a folio range for a document type. It carries a key pair used to generate and verify the electronic stamp. Each document type has its own CAF. Sources disagree on how long a CAF stays valid (6 months, counted from authorisation or from the request), so check the SII.

How long does a buyer have to reject an invoice?

The SII says 8 calendar days from when it received the document; after that, with no acceptance and no claim, the invoice is presumed accepted. A vendor blog credits Law 20,956 of October 2016 with the 8-day limit, and one vendor page says 7 days, so confirm the count with the SII.

Can this checker validate a Chilean DTE?

No. It does not read the SII’s DTE schema, and cannot verify a CAF, stamp or signature. It does test a RUT’s shape and check digit on this page, and a clean result is not an acceptance by the SII.
