The model, and what it leaves out
- Direct profit = retail price − unit cost − fee % of retail − packaging and postage you absorb − handling minutes at your hourly value.
- Wholesale profit = retail × wholesale share − unit cost − bulk packaging and freight − handling − the cost of the money tied up until the shop pays (unit cost × yearly rate × days ÷ 365).
- Consignment per unit placed = retail × (1 − shop share) × sell-through − the same cost of making and delivering every unit.
- Not modelled: returns and markdown support, shop-required displays or samples, sales tax, trade-show costs, unpaid invoices, and that a wholesale account can lift your brand or cost you retail customers.
Common questions
What is the usual wholesale price for handmade goods?
The common rule of thumb is keystone: wholesale is half of retail, and the shop doubles it. This calculator starts there and lets you change the share, then shows what each channel leaves you per unit and per order after fees, shipping, your time and the cost of waiting to be paid.
Is wholesale worth it compared with selling direct?
Per unit, usually not: a direct sale often earns two to three times the profit. Wholesale wins on volume and on time saved. The page shows how many direct sales one wholesale order equals, so you can judge whether you could realistically sell that many yourself.
How is consignment different from wholesale?
On consignment you make and deliver every unit but are paid only for the ones that sell, and the shop keeps its share. The page shows the sell-through rate you need to break even.
What do net 30 and net 60 terms cost me?
You pay for materials before the shop pays you. The tool prices that wait using a yearly cost of money you choose, and shows the cash you have out before payment arrives.
