The arithmetic, and what it leaves out
- Only swimmers who show up pay. A cancellation empties a place but the instructor and the pool minutes for the class are still paid.
- A class costs the instructor's pay and the pool rental for its lesson minutes, plus supplies per swimmer and the card fee on what is collected.
- If you rent more pool hours than your classes use, the empty hours are charged to the week at the pool rate, so adding a class to a rented block costs only the instructor.
- Profit per pool hour compares private, semi-private and group lessons on the thing you run out of: hours in the water.
Not modelled: lifeguard or deck staff beyond the instructor, insurance and certification beyond the fixed figure, sales tax, advertising, make-up lessons, closures, tips and income tax. Tips are left out on purpose. The example is made up.
Common questions
How much should I charge for swim lessons when I rent the pool by the hour?
Add the instructor's pay for the lesson minutes, the pool rental for the same minutes and the supplies, then divide by the swimmers who will actually show and by one minus the card fee and the margin you want. The result is the price per swimmer at that class size. A private lesson carries the whole pool hour on one swimmer; a group of four spreads it four ways, which is why the same hour earns very different amounts.
Are group swim lessons more profitable than private lessons?
Usually per pool hour, yes, because the pool and the instructor are paid once however many swimmers are in the water. But a group only wins if it fills: the calculator prints the number of swimmers per class at which each format stops losing money, and the profit per pool hour for each, so you can see where private lessons at a higher price beat a half-empty group.
What does an empty pool hour cost?
If you rent a block of pool time and no lesson fills part of it, you still pay for those hours. The calculator compares the hours you rent with the minutes your classes use and prints the cost of the empty hours per week and per year.
How many swimmers does a class need to break even?
The instructor's pay and the pool time for the lesson, divided by what each swimmer leaves after the card fee, cancellations and supplies. Type your price and the table shows the smallest class that does not lose money.
What does this leave out?
Tips, which belong to whoever earned them, lifeguard or deck staff you pay beyond the instructor, insurance and certification, sales tax, advertising, make-up lessons, seasonal closures, and income tax. It is a planning aid, not an estimate of record.
