The model, and what it leaves out
- Fees: percentages apply to the order total (price plus the shipping you charge), plus fixed amounts per order. Presets are the author's recollection of US schedules as of 2026-09-29 and are marked verify against the platform's current fee page; every preset can be replaced with the Custom option.
- Refunds: a refunded order gives back its revenue but not the fees or the supplier's charge. That is the cautious case; some suppliers reprint free and some platforms return part of a fee.
- Target margin: margin here is profit divided by the order total. The price is solved exactly from the fee percentages, so the ladder and the solved price agree.
- Offsite Ads: treated as an expected fee, the rate times the share of orders it drives.
- Not modelled: sales tax and VAT, currency conversion, monthly plan fees, subscription discounts from suppliers, Etsy regulatory fees outside the US, chargebacks, tiered supplier pricing, income tax, and your time.
Common questions
How do I calculate profit on a print-on-demand shirt?
Start with the order total the buyer pays (price plus any shipping you charge), then subtract the marketplace fees, the supplier's item and shipping cost, refunds, any ad spend per sale and sample orders. What is left is profit. The calculator does this for Etsy, Shopify and eBay presets or your own fee, and shows every line.
What fees does Etsy take on a print-on-demand sale?
At the rates the tool starts with, Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee, 3% plus $0.25 payment processing and a $0.20 listing fee that renews on each sale, all on the order total including shipping you charge. Offsite Ads adds 15% (12% once you pass $10,000 a year) on orders it drives. Verify against Etsy's current fee schedule; every rate is editable.
What price should I charge to hit a 30% margin?
Because the fees are mostly percentages of the order total, the price is solved directly: fixed costs divided by one minus refunds, fee percentages and the target margin. Type your target margin and the tool shows that price, then a ladder of prices from 20% below to 30% above yours with the profit at each.
How much can I spend on ads per sale?
Break-even ad spend is the profit per sale before any ad cost; spend more than that per sale and you lose money. The tool shows that figure and the matching break-even return on ad spend (order total divided by it). Put your real cost per sale in the ad spend box to see what is left.
Does this tool send my prices or costs anywhere?
No. It runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and it is not tax, legal or financial advice. Fee schedules, supplier prices and tax rules change, so check the current numbers before you rely on a result.
