Questions

Is this expense tracker really free?

Yes. There is no account, no trial, no entry limit and no paywall on exports. It runs in your browser, so it costs nothing to serve, and it stays free.

Which expenses can a freelancer deduct?

Ordinary and necessary costs of running your business, such as software, supplies, a coworking desk, business travel, advertising and professional fees. Each category here maps to a Schedule C line so you can see the total for the line. Whether a specific cost qualifies is for you and a tax professional to decide.

How are business meals handled?

Meals are counted at 50 percent, the usual limit for business meals. Change the business-use percentage on an entry for anything mixed with personal use, and mark it personal if it is not business at all.

Can I import my bank or card statement?

Yes. Paste or open a CSV export with a date, a description and an amount or debit column. Money out is imported with a suggested category, credits are skipped, and rows you already have are flagged so nothing is counted twice. Review the categories before adding them; the suggestions are keyword guesses.

Does it store my receipts?

It records whether you kept a receipt and flags expenses of $75 or more without one. It does not store photos, so keep the receipt itself in a folder or photo album and note where in the entry.

Where is my data stored?

In your browser on this device only. Clearing site data removes it, so use Download backup now and then; the file restores on any device. Nothing is uploaded.

Does this prepare my tax return?

No. It adds up what you enter and groups it by Schedule C line. It does not file anything, and it does not know your depreciation, home office or vehicle method. Use the totals as a starting point with your preparer or tax software.

What this does not model

Not modelled: depreciation and Section 179, the home office and vehicle deductions (use the linked calculators), sales tax, foreign currency conversion, multiple businesses, and state rules. Clearing site data removes your entries, so download a backup now and then.
