What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Covers: 9% over the plan threshold, 6% over the Postgraduate threshold, one editable interest rate, pay and threshold growth, the write-off year, and a yearly overpayment test.
- Gives: the deduction now, the clear or write-off year, total repaid and cancelled, and the overpayment verdict.
- Not decided: your real balance, the exact interest rate (Plan 2 varies with income), Plan 1 borrowers who must repay to age 65, Scottish or Welsh variations, part-year pay and self-assessment collection. For the Self Assessment cash side see the payments on account calculator.
Common questions
How much of my pay goes to student loan repayments?
9% of everything you earn above your plan's threshold for Plan 1, 2, 4 and 5, and a further 6% above the Postgraduate Loan threshold if you have one. It is taken from pay, not from the balance, so a bigger balance does not change the monthly deduction.
Will my student loan be written off?
Many borrowers on Plan 2 and Plan 5 never clear the loan from pay alone, and the remaining balance is cancelled after 30 years (Plan 2, Plan 4, Postgraduate) or 40 years (Plan 5); Plan 1 is 25 years. This calculator projects the write-off from your pay, growth and interest assumptions.
Should I overpay my student loan?
Only if you would otherwise clear it before write-off. If part of the balance will be cancelled anyway, extra payments just turn into cash you did not have to spend. Enter a yearly extra amount and the tool shows the change in total cost.
Which interest rate and thresholds does this use?
Prefilled with the 2025/26 thresholds and a 6% annual rate. The real Plan 2 rate varies with income and RPI and every figure is reset by government each year, so edit them from GOV.UK.
Is a student loan like normal debt?
It is repaid as a percentage of income, is cancelled after a fixed term and does not appear as a normal debt on most credit reports. That is why the monthly cost rises and falls with pay.
