See whether a Shopify upsell still beats skipping the offer.

Checkout apps pitch a one-swipe add-on. Post-purchase apps pitch a one-click after they already paid. The missing pieces are the second $0.30, the extra pack, and the carts that bounce because you asked at checkout. The table keeps the same prepaid hero order, then compares skipping, adding before they pay, and a second swipe.

Checkout extra abandon zeros the whole ticket for that share. One-click never risks the hero leftover; it pays a second $0.30. Card fees sit on whatever you charge. Transparent arithmetic from your inputs — not Shopify checkout-extensibility or an upsell-app schedule.

What this checks

Merchants search “Shopify post purchase upsell” because a $18 add-on looks like free leftover and a one-click after they paid looks free. A second 2.9% + $0.30 on $16.20 is $0.77. A $0.50 extra pack is not the hero box. A 2% extra abandon on a $31.74 ticket is $0.63 — enough to flip a thin checkout lead.

On the defaults — $48 item, $6 shipping charged, $18 add-on at 10% off ($16.20), $6 add-on cost, Basic 2.9% + $0.30, $14 cost, $5 + $1 ship, $39 / 100 plan, 18% checkout take, 12% one-click take, 2% extra abandon, 80 checkouts — skipping keeps $31.74. If they add at checkout the combined leftover is $40.97. After the 18% take and 2% drop, checkout expects $32.74 ($0.99 more). One-click expects $32.82 ($1.07 more, $8.93 on the second swipe) — $0.08 more than checkout, $85.73 / month versus skipping. Checkout take has to land about 7.0% before it matches skipping. One-click take has to land about 11.1% before it matches the checkout offer. Extra abandon can rise to about 1.8% before checkout matches one-click. Drop the extra abandon to 0% and checkout expects $33.41 against $32.82 on one-click.

It does not tell you to install an upsell app, and it is not tax or financial advice. A cart they already left is a different question — leave vs recovery emails vs a coupon. A subscribe-and-save on the same SKU is on one-time vs monthly vs a prepaid pack. A checkout they already completed is on Shop Pay Installments vs the card. The main Shopify fee calculator still compares Shopify Payments with PayPal.

Common questions

Should I add a Shopify post-purchase upsell?

A one-click add-on after they already paid keeps the hero leftover and adds a second swipe. On the calculator defaults ($48 item, $18 add-on at 10% off, 2.9%+$0.30, 18% checkout take, 12% one-click take, 2% extra abandon) skipping keeps $31.74, the checkout offer expects $32.74, and one-click expects $32.82. That is arithmetic on your inputs, not advice to install an upsell app.

Does a Shopify checkout upsell beat a post-purchase offer?

The first swipe saves a second $0.30 and one plan allocation. A 2% extra abandon can wipe that lead. On the defaults, checkout keeps $0.99 more than skipping if they still pay, but after the 2% drop one-click keeps $0.08 more ($32.82 vs $32.74). Drop the extra abandon to 0% and checkout expects $33.41.

When does a Shopify upsell lose money?

When the add-on leftover after the discount, second card fee, and extra pack is negative, or when the checkout offer's extra abandon zeros tickets that would have completed. Checkout take has to land about 7.0% on the defaults before it matches skipping. Recovering a cart they already left is a different comparison.
