Safe fixes
The rules, and what they leave out
- Comma-separated text. A semicolon file (European Excel) is read as one column, and Excel's UTF-16 "Unicode Text" needs the file chooser on this page.
- Campaign is required on every row; Ad group is required on keyword and ad rows, except campaign-level negatives. Names are limited to 128 and 255 characters.
- Keyword is at most 80 characters and 10 words with no ! @ % ^ ( ) = { } ; ~ ` < > ? \ |. The Criterion Type column (Broad, Phrase, Exact or a Negative form) sets the match type; plus-sign broad match modifier is flagged.
- Responsive search ads need 3 to 15 headlines of at most 30 characters and 2 to 4 descriptions of at most 90, with no exclamation mark in a headline, no identical headlines and display paths of at most 15 characters. Full-width characters count double.
- Final URL starts with http:// or https://, has no spaces and is at most 2048 characters.
- Campaign Daily Budget and Max CPC are digits and a decimal point only. Status is Enabled, Paused or Removed.
- Safe fixes change only the delimiter, stray spaces, currency symbols on numbers, Status and Criterion Type capitalisation, and brackets or quotes that repeat the Criterion Type. It never edits a keyword's words, a headline, a description or a URL.
- Not checked: that Google will approve the ads or keywords, ad policy and trademark rules, locations, schedules, audiences, extensions, shopping and Performance Max assets, whether a bid or budget is sensible, and whether the campaign already exists in your account. Import a small sample first and review the changes in Editor before posting.
Common questions
Why did Google Ads Editor reject or skip rows in my import?
The usual causes are a file saved with semicolons or as UTF-16 text that was then re-saved, a headline over 30 characters or a description over 90, fewer than three headlines or two descriptions in a responsive search ad, an exclamation mark in a headline, two identical headlines, a Final URL with no https://, a keyword with a symbol such as ( or ?, a blank Ad group or Criterion Type, a Status Editor does not know, and a budget or bid with a currency symbol. This tool tests each of them and names the line.
What are the Google Ads character limits for responsive search ads?
From memory of Google's documentation: a headline is 30 characters, a description is 90, each display path is 15, a responsive search ad takes 3 to 15 headlines and 2 to 4 descriptions, a keyword is 80 characters and 10 words, and full-width characters such as Japanese count as two. This tool counts them for every row.
Why did my keyword's brackets or plus signs stop working?
Editor takes the match type from the Criterion Type column, so brackets or quotes typed into the Keyword cell are redundant or end up in the keyword text. Plus-sign broad match modifier was retired in 2021. This tool flags both, and the safe fixes remove brackets that duplicate the Criterion Type.
What does Apply safe fixes change?
Only things with one reasonable reading: the delimiter, stray spaces, prices like £25.00 to 25.00, Status and Criterion Type capitalisation, and brackets or quotes in the Keyword cell that repeat the Criterion Type. It never edits a keyword's words, a headline, a description or a URL.
Is it safe to put my campaigns into a web page?
The page runs in your browser, the file is read locally and nothing is uploaded; a test in the code asserts there are no network calls.
What does this not check?
Whether Google will approve the ads, trademark and ad policy rules, locations, schedules, audiences, extensions, shopping and Performance Max assets, and whether a bid or budget is sensible. A clean result is not a promise of success: import a sample and review the pending changes in Editor first.
