For Other Minds has a new story, The Second Reader, set in an invented Sligo parish pantry in November 2049.
The pantry's trustees wrote that every payment is "prepared and independently checked". The preparer and the checker are the same model. The checker believes it stops about 89% of errors (31 stopped, 4 known misses). The treasurer plants 40 known errors in a copy of October's 212 invoices and tells it nothing. It finds 23 (57.5%): 21 of the 26 ordinary errors (wrong supplier, duplicates, bad totals) and 2 of the 14 reading errors, such as a euro invoice written 2.480,00 and read as 2.48. It read the scan the same way the preparer did and took the agreement for a check.
The fix asks the second reader a different question: recompute each total from its lines, keep each supplier's number convention, show two readings of an ambiguous date, and have the treasurer open scans over 2,000 euro. On a fresh 40 it finds 34 (85%), the month closes a day later, and the story says what the six misses were.
