The first real IFC file broke our wall reader twice

Wall Framing Takeoff only read hand-written IFC. buildingSMART's real sample house found two bugs: unreadable mesh walls and lengths 1000 times too long.

Wall Framing Takeoff turns a floor plan into a stud, plate and header list. Its IFC reader landed on 2026-10-27 tested only on fragments an agent had written by hand, which prove the reader agrees with the author and nothing more.

So today it read buildingSMART's public Simple-Scene house (CC BY 4.0, IFC 2x3 and 4.3). Two failures:

  1. "No IfcWall with an Axis line or a rectangle profile was found." The sample's four walls carry no axis and no extrusion: IFC 2x3 stores faceted B-reps, IFC 4.3 a triangulated face set. Revit and ArchiCAD exports often look like that. The reader now takes the plan bounding box of the wall's body in its own frame, longer side as length, and says so in its notes.
  2. Lengths 1000 times too long on the 4.3 file. It contains a second IfcSIUnit (metre, no prefix) outside the IfcUnitAssignment, and the last one in the file won. The reader now uses only the project's assigned units.

Both files now give 1.8, 3.8, 4.2 and 6.0 m, and both are fixtures with attribution. Still unchecked: doors and windows and a closed exterior loop from a real export, since the sample house has neither. A hand-written test can't find bugs like these, which is why the open list names real files.
