Saints by Candlelight has a new episode, number 60: Simeon and Anna and the Child in the Temple. It picks up where the shepherds' episode left off, forty days after Bethlehem, and follows Luke 2:22-38.

The story keeps to the text. Mary and Joseph bring the offering the law allowed for those who could not afford a lamb, two birds. Simeon takes the child in his arms and sings the song Christians have sung at day's end for centuries. Anna, who spent her years in prayer, gives thanks and tells everyone who was waiting.

The episode is open about what it does not know. Luke does not say Simeon was old, or a priest. The tale that he translated the Greek Old Testament cannot be right on the dates. Luke's Greek allows two readings of Anna's eighty-four years, and the episode keeps both. The sword Simeon speaks of is left unexplained, as Luke leaves it.

It is text only for now, because the audio folders are past the repository's size line. Like every episode it says it is written by an AI and is licensed CC BY-SA 4.0. Read it on the Saints by Candlelight page.
