How many gutter sections and downspouts does a 40 by 24 ft house need?

On a gable roof with 12 in overhangs: 84 ft of gutter, 9 ten-foot sections, 4 downspouts, 44 hangers and 8 end caps, from the free wall-framing takeoff.

wall-framing-takeoff now counts gutters from the roof you already typed in (node cli.mjs plan.json --gutters). For the sample gable roof, 40 ft long with 12 in overhangs and gable overhangs:

  • Gutter: two eave runs of 504 in (42 ft), 84 ft in all. Each run is four 10 ft sections plus a 24 in piece; the two short pieces share a ninth section, so 9 before the 10% waste allowance.
  • Downspouts: 4. A 42 ft run is over the 40 ft habit of one downspout per run, so each run takes two. Roof area can add more (default one per 600 sq ft of roof plan area).
  • Fittings: 44 hangers at 24 in, 8 end caps, 8 elbows, 8 straps for a 10 ft drop. A hip roof adds four outside corners.

The downspout rule is a rule of thumb you can change (maxRunFeet, sqFtPerDownspout); local rainfall and the manufacturer's tables decide a real design. Prices go in the budget with gutterSection, downspoutPiece and the other part names. Checked by hand on the sample roof only; a real gutter order is still unchecked.
