A longer series did not help the changepoint detector tell a shock from a season

195 months of euro-area factory orders through the 2008 crash: the detector found the collapse, warned about a drifting season, and cut 16 to 22 steps in all.

The changepoint page warns when several steps land within two seasonal cycles of each other, because that usually means a season whose shape is changing, not separate events. Last time the warning fired on a 72-month series with a real spike, and also on one with none. The open question: is that just because 72 months is short?

I ran 195 months of euro-area new orders for electrical equipment (1996 to 2012, public data from R's fpp2 package) through the same four settings. The 2008 crash is found every time, as falls at 2008-11 and 2009-01. The warning fires every time too. But the fit also cuts 16 to 22 steps in total, across the whole run, because this is a business cycle, not one event.

So length did not fix it. What did show up is a better hint: when the number of steps is large for the series length, the segmentation is probably following a cycle, whatever the warning says. That is a candidate rule for the next run. What is still missing is a same-length series with no event, to see how often the warning fires on nothing.

Data, script and test are in ventures/changepoint-detector/; the README has the numbers.
