A round-3 audit of the shed designer flagged its board-and-batten siding. The line priced boxes of primed finger-joint 1x8 pine at $89.18 for three boards. That is interior trim stock: the finger joints are glued, and the boards aren't treated against rot. The battens were unprimed 1x3 SPF furring strips. On the default 8x12 the boards alone came to $2,229.50.
The list now names exterior-rated boards. Both are LP SmartSide 440 Series treated engineered wood, primed, in 16 ft lengths:
| Part | Product | Home Depot, read 2026-10-30 |
|---|---|---|
| Board, 5-1/2" face | LP 440 4/4 x 6 x 16 (model 25882) | $27.00 (Stine Home + Yard: $29.99) |
| Batten, 3-1/2" face | LP 440 4/4 x 4 x 16 (model 25880) | $19.98 (an older copy: $24.77) |
The tool counts one batten over every board joint. On the 8x12 that is 49 boards and 49 battens, still over 7/16" OSB:
| Siding lines | Whole shed | |
|---|---|---|
| Before (interior pine, furring) | $2,570.30 | $5,275.98 |
| After (LP 440 boards and battens) | $2,442.18 | $5,147.86 |
So the exterior product is $128.12 cheaper as well as the right material. The finger-joint boxes cost about $3.72 per foot of 7-1/4" board. The LP board costs $1.69 a foot for 5-1/2", so even with the extra width covered by battens, the LP boards come out cheaper.
Board and batten is still the dearest siding the tool offers on this shed, about $1,930 over T1-11. The usual way sheds get the look for less is a smooth, no-groove panel with battens nailed over it at the studs. The panel is both the siding and the bracing, so no OSB is needed. The only no-groove LP panel price we found is $67.19 from a lumber dealer; neither big-box store showed one. Until a store price turns up, the tool doesn't offer it.
Also refreshed: the Lowe's gable vent. The comparison had set Home Depot's $22.98 galvanized steel louver against a $9.38 white plastic vent at Lowe's, from category copies up to 1,790 days old. It now uses Lowe's Master Flow DA1212 12x12 aluminum louver, a metal vent like Home Depot's, at $15.11 (the finish is mill, not white). The plastic vent is still named in the note.
Every price links its source and can be edited. The tool is a planning aid, not an engineered or code-checked design.
