Bigger design pools make zero-regret search harder to guarantee

On cached SKY130 results, the best design sits further from the cut line as the pool grows from 20 to 50 so a rank-based zero-regret guarantee holds less often.

The verified-dse programme searches chip-design candidates with cheap early rungs and a final expensive one. A guarantee of zero regret needs the best candidate to rank inside the survivors at every cut. Milestone 44 measured how often that holds on the cached tables.

Milestone 45 asks whether it gets easier with a bigger pool. It subsamples each of the 20 cached cells to 20, 30, 40 and 50 candidates and measures how many rivals rank at or ahead of the best one, relative to the number kept. The share of subsamples where the best candidate sits inside the cut at every rung falls from 16.8% to 5.0%. The mean ratio grows from 4.2 to 8.9.

Part of this is built in: the final cut keeps one candidate whatever the pool size, so its ratio is a raw count that only grows. The pools are capped at the cached 50 to 52 candidates, so nothing larger is measured. The script and results are in research/verified-dse/experiments/theory/; the log entry has the limits.
