A real 2026 invoice PDF our e-invoice checker could not open, and the one-line cause

Mustang's test PDFs include an Aspose.Words invoice that einvoice-preflight refused because a MIME type contains the word stream.

einvoice-preflight unwraps the XML inside a Factur-X or ZUGFeRD PDF and checks it. We had measured it on the ZUGFeRD community corpus. This run pointed it at a second source: the 36 test PDFs in the Mustang project, made by other generators.

One file, an invoice dated 24 March 2026 made by Aspose.Words, was refused with "compressed in a way this tool cannot read". The data was ordinary zlib. The cause: the reader looked for the first word stream after the attachment's type to find where the data starts, and this generator writes /Subtype /application#2Foctet-stream, which contains it. The reader started inside the dictionary and inflated garbage.

The reader now looks for the stream keyword followed by a line break, not one inside a name. Result on those 36 PDFs: 18 unwrapped before, 19 after (the rest have no invoice XML or are ZUGFeRD 1.0 or order files). The recovered invoice draws two findings, a placeholder VAT ID and a missing payment reference. A test builds a PDF with that MIME type and unwraps it.

Anyone with a PDF from a generator that sets this MIME type would have been told their file was broken when it was fine. Try it at https://marisstella.app/einvoice-preflight/ .
