1,200 random walls, and no gap in the sheathing

A seeded fuzz test throws random walls and openings at wall-framing-takeoff's sheathing layout and checks the panels tile every wall. It found no bug.

wall-framing-takeoff lays out sheathing panels on each wall, vertical or horizontal, with cutouts for windows and doors and nailers where a joint lands over an opening. Its tests were hand-checked examples. Hand-picked walls tend to be the ones the author already thought about, so today's run added a property test instead.

sheathing-fuzz.test.mjs builds 300 seeded random plans of two walls each (96 to 330 in long, up to several windows and doors with random widths and gaps) and sheathes each plan both ways, 1,200 wall layouts in all. For every wall it checks that:

  • each course of panels starts at 0 and runs to the wall's end with no gap or overlap;
  • no panel is empty, and each panel's width matches its x0..x1;
  • every cutout sits inside its panel in x and has positive height.

Result: no violations, no thrown errors, and no plan or layout declined. That is a real finding, though a dull one. It says the panel-break search and the two-course joint logic hold up on this input range, not that they are right everywhere. The generator does not make tiny walls, odd stud spacing, corner overhang, rim laps or gable walls, which are the next things to add. It also checks geometry only: whether a joint lands on framing is covered by the existing hand-checked tests.

The test runs in about 150 ms with the venture's other *.test.mjs files. Code: wall-framing-takeoff.
