What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Covers: AMAP rates by vehicle, the 10,000-mile step, passenger payments, the employee shortfall or taxable excess, and a self-employed simplified-vs-actual comparison.
- Not decided: which journeys qualify, capital allowances, VAT on fuel, Scottish or Welsh rate bands beyond the rate you pick, employer advisory fuel rates for company cars, and whether you may switch method. HMRC or your adviser decide these.
Common questions
What are the HMRC mileage rates?
For cars and vans, 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year and 25p after that. Motorcycles are 24p and bicycles 20p. Passengers add 5p a mile for each passenger carried on business.
Can I claim if my employer already pays mileage?
Yes, if they pay less than the approved amount. You can claim tax relief on the difference at your marginal rate. If they pay more, the excess is taxable.
Does commuting count?
No. Travel from home to a regular workplace is ordinary commuting. Journeys to a temporary workplace or between workplaces for work usually count.
Simplified mileage or actual costs if I am self-employed?
Simplified mileage needs only a mileage log. Actual costs need receipts and capital allowances, and you generally cannot switch back for the same vehicle. Compare both with your numbers.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
