FOR CONTRACTORS AND SERVICE CREWS

Trade Bid Studio

Add up your labor, materials and overhead, pick the margin you want to keep, and see the price, the walk-away number below which the job loses money, and what a competitor's lower quote really leaves you. Works for any trade. Start from your trade and the hours and materials are worked out from a takeoff of the job, with starting rates taken from that trade's own calculator, every one of them yours to change.

3. Hand the customer a proposal

The numbers above are for you. This prints (or saves as a PDF) the page you give the customer: your details, theirs, the scope, the price, the deposit split and a line to sign. Your costs, wages and margin are not on it. Your business details are saved on this device so you type them once; the customer's details are never saved.

Send it as a link the customer can accept online (your own estimate hub)

Run the free estimate hub on your own server (one click on Render, Fly or Docker). Type its address here and this button opens its "new proposal" form with the fields above filled in. The details travel in the part of the address after the #, which browsers never send to any server. Your costs, wages and margin are not part of it.

Everything on the printed page is text you typed or a number worked out above. It contains no warranty, lien or cancellation wording: those depend on your jurisdiction and your contract, and this tool is not the place to invent them.

Common questions

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is profit as a percentage of your cost; margin is profit as a percentage of the price. A 25% markup is only a 20% margin, so a contractor who adds 25% to cost and believes they earn a 25% margin is under-pricing every job.

What is a walk-away price?

It is your full cost: labor, payroll burden, materials, subcontractors, other costs and a share of overhead. Any price below it loses money before you earn a dollar of profit.

How do I price a job at a target margin?

Divide the full cost by one minus the margin. A job costing $2,750 at a 20% margin is $2,750 / 0.8 = $3,437.50, not $2,750 x 1.20.

Where do the trade starting rates come from?

Each trade's takeoff is taken from that trade's own calculator in this collection: its production rates, coverage and default prices, with the source of every figure recorded in the open-source preset file. They are examples so the form is not blank, not industry standards and not a statement of what your crew does. Replace them with your own hours and supplier prices.

Is my pricing uploaded anywhere?

No. The page runs in your browser with no account and no network requests.
