“TikTok Shop takes 6%” is true and incomplete. The number that decides whether a creator listing makes money is usually the commission you set, times the share of orders that come back without clawing that commission back.
A $19.99 beauty item. The buyer pays no postage. It cost $5.50 to buy, $4.28 to fulfill, $0.40 to pack, and $1.50 of ads are allocated to the order. Referral is the mid-2026 US default of 6%. You offer creators 15% of item price. 12% of orders come back. 80% of those returned units cannot be sold again. The creator keeps the commission on a return.
| Buyer paid | $19.99 |
| TikTok referral, 6% | −$1.20 |
| Creator commission, 15% | −$3.00 |
| Item, fulfill, pack, ads | −$11.68 |
| You keep | $4.11 |
|---|
That looks fine. A seller who stops here raises the commission to get more creators on the SKU.
The buyer is refunded. TikTok typically returns most of the referral and keeps a refund-admin fee (20% of that referral, capped at $5). The outbound fulfillment, packaging, and ads have already been spent. In this example 80% of the $5.50 item is unsellable. The $3.00 creator commission stays with the creator.
| Refund to the buyer | $0.00 kept |
| Refund admin (20% of $1.20) | −$0.24 |
| Creator commission, not clawed back | −$3.00 |
| Unsellable goods (80% of $5.50) | −$4.40 |
| Outbound fulfill, pack, ads | −$6.18 |
| You lose | $13.82 |
|---|
88% of the time you keep $4.11. 12% of the time you lose $13.82. Expected profit is $1.96 — less than half of the “kept order” figure, and a 9.8% margin on the revenue you actually retain. The same SKU sold organically (no creator cut) expects about $5.00. The affiliate path costs roughly $3.04 more per order after returns, almost the entire 15% you offered.
Open the calculator and change the return rate or the claw-back toggle. The gap is the product: a listing that looks profitable at 6% + 15% is a different listing once returns keep the commission.
Under the announced 8% referral plus 1.5% creator facilitation on affiliate-sourced orders, the same affiliate path keeps about $1.36 instead of $1.96. That is still not a pricing recommendation — it is the arithmetic on these assumptions. Confirm the live schedule in Seller Center before you reprice.
Usually yes. In the worked example the creator keeps the 15% commission when the order comes back, TikTok returns most of the 6% referral but keeps a refund-admin fee, and the outbound fulfillment, packaging, and ads are already spent. A kept order leaves $4.11 and a returned order loses $13.82.
Expected profit is $1.96 per order, not the $4.11 a kept order shows, because 88% of the time you keep $4.11 and 12% of the time you lose $13.82. That is a 9.8% margin on the revenue you actually retain. The same SKU sold organically with no creator cut expects about $5.00.
