See whether fighting a chargeback still beats a refund.
A Shopify Payments dispute pulls the original ticket and adds a
chargeback fee. The usual pitch is “always fight, you might win.”
The missing piece is the fee plus the processing charges a refund
can still return. The table keeps the same SKU, then compares
refunding now, fighting at your win rate, and accepting the pull.

Refund leftover is the cash already in the order minus any processing fee the refund still returns and any goods you actually get back. Accept and fight both pay the chargeback fee. Transparent arithmetic from your rates — not Shopify’s current dispute schedule or a win-rate forecast.
What this checks
Shopify merchants search “Shopify chargeback fee” and “should I
fight a Shopify chargeback” because representment looks free if you
win. On the defaults — $48 item, $6 shipping, Basic 2.9% + $0.30,
$20.39 cash in the order, $15 fee, 25% wins, goods already gone —
the completed sale kept $31.74. Refund now keeps −$20.39. Fight
keeps −$23.76. Accept keeps −$37.26. Refunding saves $16.87 versus
accepting and $3.37 versus fighting. Representment needs about
31.2% wins to match a refund. Two disputes a month is $33.73
versus accepting.
It does not recommend fighting or refunding, and it is not tax or
financial advice. You remain responsible for your evidence, your
win rate, and the fee on your statement. Compare
store credit vs a cash refund
when the customer asked for a return rather than filing a
chargeback, or
local delivery vs the carrier label
when the question is a driver run rather than a dispute, or
gift card vs selling the SKU now
when the question is stored value rather than a dispute, or the main

when the question is processor, POS, installments, or Capital.
Common questions
How much is a Shopify chargeback fee?
Shopify Payments and most card processors charge a chargeback fee on top of pulling the original order. This page defaults to $15 so the table is immediately useful. Replace it from your own statement — it is not Shopify's live dispute schedule.
Should I fight a Shopify chargeback or just refund?
Refunding before the chargeback lands skips the network fee and can still return the processing percentage. Fighting only wins if your representment win rate covers that fee plus the processing fees a refund can return. On a $54 ticket and a $15 fee, that floor is about 31%. A 25% win rate still loses to refunding. This page does the arithmetic from your rates; it does not tell you to fight or refund.
