The rules this applies, and what it leaves out
- 11 hours of driving and a 14-hour window per shift; then 10 hours off duty to reset (49 CFR 395.3).
- A 30-minute break after 8 cumulative hours of driving; any 30+ minute non-driving stop (including on-duty dwell) satisfies it. The break time still runs inside the 14-hour window.
- A 60 or 70 hour cycle; a 34-hour restart clears it.
- Not modelled: sleeper-berth splits, adverse driving conditions, short-haul and other exemptions, state or Canadian rules, and days rolling off the cycle. Enter the cycle hours remaining today from your ELD and re-check each morning.
Common questions
How do I know if I can make a delivery on time under hours-of-service rules?
Add up the driving hours, then apply the limits: 11 hours driving and a 14-hour window per shift, a 30-minute break after 8 hours of driving, 10 hours off to reset, and a 60 or 70 hour weekly cycle. This tool runs that schedule for your own clocks and legs and tells you when you actually arrive.
What is the 14-hour rule?
After you come on duty you have 14 consecutive hours to finish driving. Time spent loading, waiting or resting inside the window still burns it, which is why a long dwell at a shipper can cost a whole 10-hour reset.
Does waiting at a dock count as my 30-minute break?
Under the current federal rule a break of at least 30 consecutive minutes of non-driving time, including on-duty time, satisfies it. The planner treats any dwell of 30 minutes or more as the break.
When do I need a 34-hour restart?
When your 60 or 70 hour cycle runs out. The planner can insert one automatically and show what it does to the arrival time.
What does this leave out?
Sleeper-berth splits, adverse driving conditions, short-haul and other exemptions, state rules, and the days that roll off the cycle as the week moves on. Enter the cycle hours you have left today from your ELD.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser tab and nothing is sent anywhere. There are no accounts.
Is this a logbook or legal advice?
No. It is a planning aid built on numbers you enter. Your ELD and the regulations govern; verify against the current FMCSA rules.
