Verify every default before you rely on it
The rates and percentages below are starting points read from memory, not live figures. Verify them against the current GSA and IRS notices: the transportation-industry M&IE per diem rate (this page starts at $80/day within the continental US and $86/day outside it), the 75% travel-day share, the 80% DOT limit, and the Social Security wage base for the year. This page makes no network calls and cannot look any of them up.
Employees: W-2 company drivers generally cannot deduct meals as unreimbursed employee expenses, but verify; rules changed under 2025 legislation. This tool is for self-employed owner-operators.

Self-employment tax is 15.3% of 92.35% of net profit, with the 12.4% Social Security part stopping at the wage base. Income tax saved is your bracket times the deduction plus half the self-employment tax saved. State tax, the qualified business income deduction, additional Medicare tax and phase-outs are not modeled.
What this does and does not say
- Per diem is days away times the M&IE rate, with travel days at 75%, then the 80% limit. Keep a log of dates and places; a per diem still needs records of when you were away.
- Receipts are the actual meal costs, also limited to 80%, and you must be able to document them. The page shows the larger figure; whether you may use either method for your situation is a question for a tax professional.
- Not checked: your eligibility, tax home, state rules, whether the rates here are current, and any 2025 or later legislation. W-2 company drivers: verify; rules changed under 2025 legislation.
