Hands-Free Language Coach
Language practice you do with your ears and voice only. Press Start once, put the phone away, and the coach runs the session: it says a phrase, you say it back, it scores you and moves on. Streaks, XP and spaced review, like a language game, without the tapping.
Driving? Start before you set off, mount the phone, never look at or touch it while moving, and follow your local laws. Say stop whenever the road needs your attention. This browser version needs the page to stay open with the screen on.
Practise now
Say repeat, skip or stop at any time (or the same word in the language you're learning).
Use it in ChatGPT or Claude voice mode
Want open conversation in any language, not just drills? The same hands-free lesson protocol ships as a Claude skill and as custom GPT instructions. Add it to your assistant, switch on voice mode, and say "start my language lesson". It runs on your own assistant subscription; nothing goes through us.
How it works
- Voice only. Every prompt, correction and score is spoken. You never need to read the screen.
- Scored speaking. Your browser's speech recogniser transcribes you; the coach compares the words with the target phrase, ignoring accents and punctuation. It checks whether you were understood, not your accent in detail.
- Spaced review. Phrases you miss come back first; phrases you nail move up a box and appear less often.
- Streaks and XP. One finished session a day keeps your streak. Share it with a friend.
Coming next: a native iOS app (then Android) that keeps going with the screen locked and through CarPlay and headphones, open conversation practice, friends' leagues, and listen-only stories (see the sibling project, Listen & Learn Audio).
Questions
Can I really learn a language without looking at a screen?
For speaking and listening practice, yes: every step of a session is spoken, and you answer out loud. Press Start once and the coach runs the session by voice. Say repeat, skip or stop at any time. Reading and writing still need a screen or a book.
Is it safe to use while driving?
Start the session before you set off, mount the phone, and never look at or touch it while moving. Follow your local laws on phone use in vehicles. If the conversation competes with the road for your attention, say stop.
How is my speaking scored?
Your browser's speech recogniser transcribes what you said, and the coach compares those words with the expected phrase, ignoring accents and punctuation. It is a check of whether the recogniser understood you, not a phonetic assessment by a teacher.
Does my voice get uploaded?
This page sends nothing to us. Speech recognition is done by your browser, and some browsers (Chrome, for example) send the audio to their own speech service to transcribe it. Your progress is stored only in this browser.
Can I use it with ChatGPT or Claude voice mode?
Yes. The project ships a ready-made skill for Claude and instructions for a custom GPT that run the same hands-free lesson protocol in any language, in the assistant's voice mode.
