What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Fuel: gallons × (pump price − delivered cost) is gross margin. Card fees are the card share of sales × fee % plus transactions (card gallons ÷ average fill) × the per-transaction fee. Net fuel margin is the difference, per gallon.
- Inside: each category's sales × gross margin, less card fees on the card share of inside sales and shrink as a share of sales, plus commissions.
- Costs: labor hours × wage × (1 + burden), plus the fixed costs you enter. Loan payments come after operating profit; debt coverage is operating profit ÷ loan payments.
- Break-even gallons: the volume at which fuel net margin plus everything else covers loan payments, holding every other figure fixed.
- Not decided: what margins your market allows; tobacco, alcohol, lottery and fuel licensing and tax rules; environmental and tank compliance; lender terms and thresholds; whether volume holds; and tax.
Common questions
How much do card fees cost a gas station?
Card fees are charged on the sale, and fuel sales at the pump are large, so the fee on a gallon rises when the pump price rises even though your margin does not. The page subtracts the fee, as a percentage plus a per-transaction charge, from your gross fuel margin to show cents a gallon you keep.
How much profit does a convenience store make per gallon of gas?
Gross margin per gallon is the pump price less delivered cost; what is left after card fees is the number that matters. Enter your own price, cost and fees; the page does not assume a market margin.
How many gallons do I need to sell to break even?
Inside margin and commissions less labor and fixed costs form a base; fuel net margin per gallon times gallons has to cover what that base and your loan payments leave. The page solves this and also shows the net fuel margin you would need at your current volume.
What is debt service coverage on a store loan?
Operating profit before loan payments divided by loan payments. Lenders set their own minimum, commonly above 1.25 times; the page shows your ratio and leaves the threshold to your lender.
