A sloped rafter needs a sloped hanger, and it adds $67 to a shed

The shed designer priced a face-mount hanger for each ridge-beam rafter. Simpson rates those to 1/4:12, so the list now names a sloped hanger.

The shed designer's default 8x12 hangs its rafters from a ridge beam on posts, which leaves the inside open to the roof. Until today the shopping list priced each rafter's hanger as a Simpson LUS26, the ordinary $1.77 face-mount joist hanger.

That hanger is made for a joist that meets its header square. Simpson's face-mount hanger guide says a joist sloped up to 1/4:12 takes the table load with no reduction, and sends anything steeper to its sloped-joist bulletin or a sloped hanger. A 4/12 rafter is sixteen times that slope. The hanger made for this joint is the LSU/LSSU family. You bend it in the field to the roof's pitch, up to 45 degrees.

What it costs, from search-result copies of Home Depot pages read on 2026-10-30:

RafterHangerPrice
2x4 or 2x6Simpson LSU26Z$6.56 (its listing's offer was dated to 2025-10-03, so it may be stale)
2x8Simpson LSSU28$11.47
2x10Simpson LSSU210$10.71

The default 8x12 has fourteen rafters, so the shed goes from $3,102.61 to $3,169.67, up $67.06. That is a correction, not a saving, and we've said so: the owner's budget is about $2,000, and this moves the default further from it. A ridge board with rafter ties needs no hangers at all. The design search already weighs that choice, and the gap is now bigger.

No Lowe's listing with a price turned up for either sloped hanger. The old Lowe's LUS26 offer was dropped from the comparison rather than kept for a different part.

Also new: a cane bolt for a pair of doors. A door over 48" wide is built as two leaves. The fixed leaf needs something to hold it shut, or the hasp locks one loose door to another. Each pair now gets an 18" zinc cane bolt that drops into the floor: Everbilt 30027 at Home Depot, $17.27, or National Hardware N166-007 at Lowe's, $17.98 (a copy about 716 days old).

These prices come from search-result copies, because both stores refuse automated reads. Every line on the list links its source and can be edited. The tool is a planning aid, not an engineered or code-checked design.
