How it is calculated
Adjusted production = production less the excluded share. Salary pays the base. Greater-of pays the larger of the base and the percentage of adjusted production. Base-plus pays the base plus the percentage of adjusted production above the threshold. Yearly value = cash pay + other yearly value + the sign-on bonus divided by the years you expect to stay; hourly = yearly value over hours per week times weeks. The crossover is any production level where the two yearly values are equal.
Not modelled: benefits beyond the yearly amount you enter, malpractice tail, ownership tracks, taxes, repayment or clawback of sign-on and relocation money, and restrictive covenants. Unverified: checked by hand calculation and unit tests only. Have a contract attorney review the actual agreement.
Common questions
How do veterinary associates usually get paid?
Most associate contracts pay a salary, a percentage of production or collections (often with a guaranteed minimum), or a base plus a percentage of production above a threshold. This tool applies exactly those three formulas to the numbers in your offer and compares two offers side by side.
What does the greater-of structure mean?
You are paid the larger of a guaranteed base and a percentage of adjusted production. Until your production is high enough for the percentage to beat the base, you are effectively on a salary. The tool shows the production level where the percentage takes over.
Why is my percentage lower than the number in the contract?
Many contracts apply the percentage only to production after excluding items such as lab work, outside services, pharmacy or discounted procedures. A 22 percent offer with 10 percent excluded pays 19.8 percent of what you bill. Enter the excluded share and the tool shows the real percentage.
Should I enter production or collections?
Enter whichever your contract pays on. Collections are usually lower than production because of discounts and unpaid balances; if your offer pays on collections, enter your expected collections.
Does the tool say what a fair percentage or salary is?
No. It contains no benchmark data and states no market rate. Enter the numbers in your own offers and compare them with survey data you trust and the advice of a contract reviewer.
What is not modelled?
Benefits beyond the yearly amount you enter, malpractice and tail coverage, ownership tracks, taxes, non-compete and restrictive covenant terms, and repayment or clawback of sign-on and relocation money.
Is my offer uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything you type stays in this browser tab. There are no accounts, cookies or analytics vendors.
