What this does and doesn't do
This applies the numbers you enter to one representative block of sessions — it does not track which specific student owes a makeup, does not schedule anything, and does not predict any one student's actual attendance. Treat the result as the arithmetic behind a pricing decision, not a record of any real student's account.
Common questions
Does a prepaid session package actually protect my income?
It protects your revenue: the student has already paid, so a no-show does not cost you that session's fee. It does not automatically protect your hourly pay. If your package promises a makeup for a missed session, you still work that hour eventually — the discount you gave to sell the package is paid on every hour once all of them are delivered, not just the hours actually attended the first time.
When does a package pay worse per hour than charging per session?
Whenever the package's per-session discount is deeper than your no-show rate and a missed session earns a free makeup. Under pay-per-session, a no-show simply frees that slot — you are not paid for it, but you also do not work it. Under a package with makeup owed, that slot is rescheduled rather than freed, so you work the same total hours as if nobody had missed a session, at the discounted rate.
So should I stop offering makeups?
This calculator does not tell you what policy to run — that depends on what keeps students booking with you. It tells you the arithmetic consequence of each policy so the tradeoff (guaranteed revenue vs. protected hourly pay) is a choice you make on purpose, not a side effect of a discount you picked to sound attractive.
What no-show rate should I use if I don't track one?
Use your best honest estimate from recent memory, or run the comparison at a couple of different rates (for example 5% and 20%) to see how sensitive the result is. The point is the relationship between your discount and your no-show rate, not a precise historical figure.
Is this scheduling software or tax advice?
No. It applies the numbers you enter to one representative block of sessions — it does not track which student owes a makeup, does not schedule anything, and is not tax, legal, or financial advice.
I already compare these in a spreadsheet — why use this instead?
A spreadsheet catches the revenue comparison fine. It usually misses the hours a makeup guarantee still owes on a missed session, which is where a discounted package can quietly pay worse per hour worked. See this calculator vs. a spreadsheet for a worked example.
I keep my discount at or below my no-show rate — isn't that safe?
It protects your revenue. It does not protect your hourly pay if you owe a makeup on a missed session — see how much you can discount a package before it costs you money for the worked example where a discount matched exactly to the no-show rate still costs $6.00 an hour.
