Your room, year by year
| Year | Annual limit | Cumulative |
|---|
What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Covers: cumulative annual limits 2009 to 2026, withdrawals restored the next January, and the 1% a month tax on the highest excess.
- Gives: room on 1 January, room now, room after a planned deposit, and the monthly and to-December cost of any excess.
- Not decided: time as a non-resident, direct transfers and other cases that are not contributions, any buffer or relief the CRA allows on small excesses (not applied, so a small excess may be overstated), the exact month the excess arose, and anything that changed after this was written.
Common questions
How much TFSA room do I have?
Add the annual limits from the later of 2009, the year you turned 18 and the year you became a Canadian resident, then subtract all contributions and add back withdrawals made in earlier years. For someone eligible since 2009 the cumulative limit is CAD 109,000 in 2026.
What is the penalty for over-contributing to a TFSA?
The CRA charges tax of 1% per month on the highest excess amount in each month the excess stays in your TFSAs, until it is withdrawn or new room covers it.
If I withdraw money, can I put it back this year?
Not without using new room. Withdrawals are added to your room on 1 January of the following year, so re-contributing in the same year can create an excess.
Do all my TFSAs count together?
Yes. Your room is one figure across every TFSA at every institution.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
