What this does not cover
- Your contract's definitions. How a wRVU is measured, whether the threshold prorates for leave, what counts as a shortfall and when it is reconciled are all in the agreement. This tool takes your numbers as given.
- Benchmarks. No survey data is included. If you compare your rate with MGMA, AMGA or another survey, use a figure you are licensed to see and type it in yourself.
- Taxes, benefits and retirement. Everything is pre-tax. Health insurance, retirement match, disability and life cover, and state tax are not modelled.
- Non-competes. The tool shows the income at stake for the months you enter. Whether a restriction is enforceable depends on your state and is a question for a lawyer.
- Clawback wording. Repayment may be the gross amount, may accelerate on termination for cause, and may or may not apply if the employer ends the contract. Read the clause.
- Hours. Pay per hour uses the hours you enter for all duties. Call hours, charting and administrative time only count if you include them.
Common questions
What is a wRVU conversion factor?
It is the dollars you are paid per work relative value unit (wRVU) you personally generate. If your conversion factor is $50 and you generate 8,000 wRVUs, your productivity value is $400,000. The rate is set in your contract, so this tool asks you to type it in rather than assuming a market figure.
How does a wRVU threshold work?
In a base-plus-productivity contract you are paid a base salary, and you earn extra only for wRVUs above a threshold. If the base is $300,000 and the factor is $50, the base is worth 6,000 wRVUs of work, so a threshold at 6,000 means the incentive starts exactly where the base is fully earned. Thresholds set higher or lower than that change who carries the risk.
What is the break-even wRVU count between base pay and pure productivity?
It is the annual wRVUs at which pure productivity pays the same as the base structure. Below it the guaranteed base pays more; above it productivity does. This tool solves it from the numbers you type and shows how far your expected volume sits above or below it.
What happens if I miss my wRVU target?
It depends on the contract. Some pay the base regardless, some carry the gap forward and deduct it from future incentive, and some require you to repay it at the end of the year or if you leave. This tool lets you enter the share you would repay and shows the exposure at 80% to 120% of your expected volume.
How do I compare two physician offers?
Enter each offer on its own, choose the pay structure it uses, and compare annual pay, pay per hour worked, effective dollars per wRVU and the year-one cash including any signing bonus. The tool also finds the change in productivity at which the two offers pay the same.
Is this legal or financial advice?
No. It is an illustrative calculator that uses only the numbers you type. It does not know your contract's definitions, cannot judge whether a non-compete is enforceable, and includes no compensation survey data. Have a lawyer who reviews physician contracts read the agreement before you sign.
