Keep the Mass intentions book, and catch the problems before the bishop's visit does.

Write down each intention and its offering, list the parish's Masses, and book intentions into them. The book shows what is open, booked, said or passed on, and checks the entries against canons 948 to 958: one offered intention per Mass, the one-year limit, offerings from a second Mass the same day, and transfers to other priests. It exports the register as a spreadsheet.

For parish secretaries, pastors and business managers. Free and open source. Not canonical advice: your diocese's own rules come first. See what canon law says about Mass intentions, with a worked example, and the plan for the rest of the parish office.

Common questions

How long does a parish have to say a Mass intention?

Canon 953: no one may accept more offerings than he can satisfy within a year. Canon 956: obligations not satisfied within a year go to the ordinary, in the way he sets. The year starts the day the priest received the intention unless it is otherwise evident (c. 955 §2).

Can a priest keep the offering from every Mass he says in a day?

No. Except on Christmas, he keeps the offering for one Mass and transfers the others to the purposes the ordinary prescribes (c. 951 §1). A priest who concelebrates a second Mass that day cannot accept an offering for it at all (c. 951 §2).

Can we pass intentions to another priest or the missions?

Yes, unless the donor expressly asked otherwise (c. 954), and the whole offering goes with it unless the excess over the diocesan amount was certainly given for the priest personally (c. 955 §1). Record what you passed on and to whom (c. 955 §3).

What does the tool not check?

Collective intentions under the 1991 decree, foundation Masses, the Mass for the people, the "extrinsic title" recompense in c. 951 §1, and anything your diocese has added. It reads only what you type.

Is my book uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser. The book is kept in this browser's local storage on this device, so back it up as JSON. It is a working copy, not the parish's official book (c. 958 §1).
