What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Covers: the NZD 60,000 current and expected turnover tests, the taxi and ride-share rule and a 21-day registration window.
- Gives: your 12-month turnover, a projected figure, a deadline and a checklist.
- Not decided: which of your sales count as taxable turnover, sales of associated businesses, the date your turnover actually went over the line (a deadline earlier than shown means you should register now), voluntary registration advice, filing frequency, penalties, and anything that changed after this was written.
Common questions
When do I have to register for GST in New Zealand?
When your taxable turnover in the last 12 months has gone over NZD 60,000, or you expect it to go over in the next 12 months. Taxi and ride-share drivers must be registered whatever their turnover.
How is taxable turnover counted?
Add your sales for the current month and the previous 11 (the current test), or the current month and the next 11 (the projected test). It leaves out the GST itself, exempt supplies such as residential rent and financial services, and the sale of private assets.
How long do I have to register?
This tool models the window as 21 days from the day your turnover went over the line, or the day you could tell it would. Confirm the current window with Inland Revenue; registering late can mean owing GST you did not charge.
Do I need an IRD number first?
Yes. You need an IRD number before you can register for GST.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent.
