NEWSLETTER SPONSORSHIP RATE CALCULATOR

Where do newsletter sponsorship rate benchmarks come from?

Newsletter ad marketplaces (Swapstack, Paved, Sponsy, and others) and creator-economy write-ups routinely quote sponsorship prices as a CPM against opens — cost per 1,000 opens — rather than against raw subscriber count. That single choice is the most useful thing to borrow from them even if you never list your newsletter on a marketplace at all.

Why opens, not subscribers

A sponsor is paying for a person to actually see their ad, not for a row in your database. A list of 20,000 subscribers with a 15% open rate produces about 3,000 opens per send. A list of 5,000 subscribers with a 55% open rate produces about 2,750 — nearly the same number of real readers, from a list four times smaller. Pricing against subscriber count alone rewards a large, disengaged list over a small, attentive one; pricing against opens does not.

Why the ranges are wide

This calculator's benchmark ranges are deliberately wide — often a 2x spread between the low and high end of the same placement and niche. That is not imprecision; it reflects the real spread in what sponsors actually pay, driven by factors a subscriber-count-and-open-rate calculator cannot see:

Use the low end of the range as a floor you should rarely go below, and the high end as a target to work toward as you build a track record — not as two arbitrary numbers to average.

How to move your ask up from the floor

LeverWhat it does
Share past sponsor resultsClick-through rate or conversions from a prior sponsor (with their permission) is the single strongest evidence a new sponsor can act on.
Sell out placements before dropping priceConsistently sold-out inventory is itself a pricing signal; discounting an unsold slot trains sponsors to wait you out.
Bundle rather than discountAdding a second placement (say, a mention in your next issue too) usually protects the per-send rate better than lowering it.
Re-check your open rate by measurement windowSome platforms report open rate over 24 hours, others over 30 days — compare like for like before quoting a number to a sponsor.
