Mileage Log privacy policy

Applies to the Mileage Log web page and the Mileage Log phone app. Both are free, open source (MIT) software.

What does Mileage Log collect?

Nothing. There is no account, no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics and no server that receives your data. The people who publish this software do not receive your trips, your locations or your device identifiers.

Does Mileage Log track my location?

The phone app asks for location access, including in the background, so it can notice a drive and add up its distance. Positions are processed on the phone to find where a drive started and ended, and only the trip records you keep (date, places, distance, category) are stored, on the phone. Places are not looked up with any outside service. The web page uses location only while it is open and you press Start, and does not store positions.

Where your log lives

On your device only (browser storage or phone app storage). Backups and reports are files you choose to save or share; where they go after that is your choice. Deleting a trip removes it; uninstalling the app or clearing site data removes everything.

Sharing

We share nothing because we hold nothing. If you share a report with a tax preparer, you are sending it yourself.

Children

Not directed to children under 13.

Changes and contact

Changes are made in the public source repository and dated in its history. Questions: open an issue in the repository. This policy is not legal or tax advice, and Mileage Log is not tax advice.

No warranty. This tool is provided free and as-is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. It is not legal, tax, or financial advice, and it does not replace a qualified professional. Results are estimates that depend entirely on the trips you enter and on IRS rates that change; confirm rates and rules at irs.gov or with a tax professional before you file.
