This calculator vs. SMC³ FastClass
Two different starting points: FastClass looks up the exact NMFC item for a commodity you can already name. This page estimates the density-based class band for a pallet you have not classified yet — the input FastClass needs before it can answer anything.
What each tool is for
FastClass, from SMC³, is a licensed software product — installed or accessed online — built on the official National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) data. Its job is exact-item lookup: given a commodity, it returns the NMFC item number, the class or classes that apply, and the packaging, sub-group, and rule notes that go with it, described on SMC³'s own FastClass product page. It is sold as an ongoing licence to carriers, logistics providers, and shippers, and it is the closest thing the LTL industry has to an authoritative classification lookup for a commodity you can already name.
This calculator does not have a commodity database and does not look up an NMFC item — that is not the job it does. It estimates the density-based class band from the outside dimensions, weight, and piece count of a pallet or crate, which is the planning question that comes before a commodity has an NMFC item decided, or before a shipper wants to sanity-check what a carrier's own answer should land near. It runs free in any browser, needs no licence and no login, and nothing typed in is uploaded anywhere.
| Question | Where to answer it |
|---|---|
| What is the exact NMFC item and class for this specific commodity, with its packaging rules and sub-groups? | FastClass, or your carrier — that is a licensed lookup this calculator does not do. |
| Roughly what density-based class band should this pallet land in before I ask for a quote? | This calculator — type in the dimensions, weight, and piece count, get a class estimate instantly, free, no login. |
| Would repacking a few inches shorter, or a few pounds heavier, earn a cheaper class on this pallet? | This calculator's built-in repack levers — the height and weight it would take to reach the next class down. |
| How much headroom is there before a carrier's dimensioner re-rates this pallet into the class above? | This calculator — the same estimate states the height at which that happens and how much clearance is left. |
| Does my commodity have handling, stowability, or liability rules that move it off the density-based class entirely? | FastClass, or the NMFC itself — those factors are outside what a density calculator can estimate. |
| Do I need an account, a licence, or an install to use the tool? | This calculator: no. FastClass is a licensed product sold as an ongoing subscription. |
Most shippers who use both get different value from each: FastClass (or a carrier's own classification desk) for the authoritative item once a commodity is decided, and a density calculator like this one for sizing a pallet, comparing packaging options, and setting expectations before that lookup happens or before a carrier's quote comes back. This page's own estimate says as much — it is a density-based planning figure, not an NMFC classification, and it says to verify the final class with the carrier or a qualified freight professional.
This tool needs no account and no sign-in: it is a static page, the arithmetic runs in your browser, and once it has loaded it keeps working with the connection off.
Common questions
Should I use this calculator or SMC³ FastClass?
They answer different questions at different points in the shipment. FastClass, from SMC³, is a licensed software product built on the official National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) data — its job is to look up the exact NMFC item, class, and packaging rules for a known commodity, and it is sold to carriers, brokers, and shippers as an ongoing subscription. This page has no commodity database and does not look up an NMFC item at all. It estimates the density-based class band from dimensions, weight, and piece count you type in — the input FastClass needs before it can look anything up — for free, instantly, in the browser, with no login and no licence. A shipper who already knows the NMFC item for their commodity should look it up in FastClass or ask their carrier; a shipper sizing a pallet before that item is decided, or sanity-checking what a carrier's answer should land near, is in the right place here.

No. This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by SMC³. FastClass, CzarLite, and SMC³ are trademarks of their owner, named here only to describe what this calculator is and is not, based on SMC³'s own public product page.
