How to make a round-robin schedule, with a worked example

A round robin is the simplest fair league: every team plays every other team the same number of times. The hard part is not the pairing, it is everything around it: the odd team who sits out each week, who is at home, which court, and the team captain who cannot play on the 20th.

A worked example

Five invented pickleball teams play on Tuesday evenings from 6 October 2026 on two courts. Five teams means five rounds of two matches, and each team has one bye. The home team is listed first.

RoundDateCourt 1Court 2Bye
16 OctBolts v EaglesDinks v CometsAces
213 OctComets v AcesEagles v DinksBolts
320 OctDinks v BoltsAces v EaglesComets
427 OctEagles v CometsBolts v AcesDinks
53 NovAces v DinksComets v BoltsEagles

Every pair meets once (ten matches), every team hosts twice and visits twice, nobody has two home or two away games in a row, and each team plays twice on each court. The generator checks all of that with a separate validator before it shows you the result. Bring a blackout date, for example Comets away on 20 October, and only the one match that clashes moves, to a makeup round on the next free Tuesday.

Questions

What is a round-robin schedule?

A format where every team plays every other team the same number of times. A single round robin with n teams has n(n-1)/2 matches; a double round robin plays each pair twice, once at each team's home venue. It is the fairest way to rank a small league because nobody is knocked out and the table is decided by everyone's results against everyone.

What happens with an odd number of teams?

The circle method adds an invisible extra team, so each round one real team has a bye. Five teams play five rounds and every team sits out exactly once. The generator lists the bye in each round so the team knows it is not playing that week.

How do you keep home and away fair?

In the circle method the home side of each pairing is set while the rounds are built, not patched afterwards. With an even number of teams the minimum possible number of home or away breaks (two consecutive home games or two consecutive away games) is the number of teams minus two, and the generator reaches it. With an odd number of teams no team gets two home or two away games in a row. A double round robin is mirrored, so every pair plays once at each home.

What if a team cannot play on a certain date?

Type the team and the date as a blackout. The generator moves only the affected match out of that round and plays it in a makeup round after the regular season, so the other teams are not held up. If a date has to be given up entirely, it says so. Check the makeup dates with the teams before you publish.
