How much to charge to install crown molding

Finish carpenters get shopped on a published $8 a foot installed crown Facebook special. Those numbers cannot see the grade or the extras. 80 lf of paint-grade simple cove in one 8-ft room is a different job from 80 lf of stain-grade built-up crown in a two-story foyer with 14 coped insides and an LED cove.

Price the run and the extras, not the $8/ft dump

A crown-molding install is a run, then a grade, then how much of that run is actually sold. Paint-grade is miters, caulk, then paint. Stain-grade insides are coped. Simple cove is the cheap special. Colonial is more cuts. Built-up is two or three stacked pieces. Flat 8-ft is the cheap-special assumption. A cathedral or tray changes the spring angle. A two-story foyer is a scaffold ticket.

Paint-grade cove is not a stain-grade foyer

The cheap special is almost always 80 lf of paint-grade simple cove, eight insides, one 8-ft room, no demo, no LED. A stain-grade built-up foyer is a different crew day. Matching a per-foot number on a foyer job is how a sold crown job becomes a loss when the corners and the access eat the margin.

This is not painting, drywall, or plantation shutters

Interior painting is a coat on walls. Drywall is gypsum hang-and-finish. Cabinet refinishing is doors. Popcorn-ceiling is a scrape and skim. Plantation shutters are louvered panels in an opening. This prices a crown-molding run: linear feet, corners, grade, profile, and extras.

Walk-away price

Load the wage with payroll burden. Add overhead as a share of direct cost. Then take margin as a share of the customer’s price, not a markup on cost. The walk-away number is total cost. A proposed price under that number loses money before you take anything out of it.

Common questions

How much should I charge to install crown molding?

Charge from linear feet, corners, grade, profile, and extras — not a published $8-a-foot special. 80 lf of paint-grade simple cove in one 8-ft room is a different job from 80 lf of stain-grade built-up crown in a two-story foyer with 14 coped insides and an LED cove.

Is paint-grade the same bid as stain-grade?

No. Paint-grade is miters, caulk, then paint. Stain-grade insides are coped and the stock costs more — there is no caulk hiding a bad joint. Matching a paint-grade special on a stain-grade foyer is how a sold crown job becomes a loss when the corners and the access eat the margin.

How do corners, a foyer, and an LED cove change a crown price?

Inside corners are copes on stain-grade and miters on paint-grade. A cathedral or tray ceiling changes the spring angle. A two-story foyer is a scaffold ticket. Demo, blocking, an LED cove, and matching existing casing do not live in a published per-foot special.

Is this the same as painting, drywall, or plantation shutters?

No.
