What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Counts: cost to get in = tuition + fees + weeks in school x current weekly pay; monthly gain = ((miles x pay per mile - extra weekly cost) x weeks driven - current weekly pay x weeks driven) / 12; payback months = cost to get in / monthly gain; company-paid route = fees + the same lost pay, earning the company rate for the commitment months and your own rate afterwards, compared with paying yourself over the period you choose.
- Rules used: a commercial driver's license is governed by 49 CFR Part 383. This page does not check eligibility, endorsements or medical qualification.
- Not decided: how many miles you will actually be given, taxes, per diem treatment, health insurance, what you owe if you leave a company-paid contract early, whether you pass, job availability where you live, and pay changes after your first year.
Common questions
Is CDL school worth it?
It depends on the miles you are actually paid for. Add tuition, fees and the pay you give up while in school, then divide by how much more a month driving pays than your current job after the extra costs of the road. The page does that division and shows it at different weekly miles so you can see how much it depends on them.
How long does it take to pay back CDL school?
Months of driving to recover what you spent getting in: entry cost divided by monthly gain over your current job. At low guaranteed miles it can take years, and at some pay rates it never does, which is why the page shows payback at 1,500 to 3,000 miles a week.
Is company-paid CDL training cheaper than paying for school yourself?
Usually the school is free or cheap up front, in exchange for a commitment period at a lower rate and money owed if you leave early. The page compares your net position over a period you choose, using your own pay rates for each route. Read the contract for what you owe if you leave.
Does this include taxes?
No. Pay and costs are before tax, and the extra weekly cost figure is yours to set. Treat the result as a worksheet and check the numbers with a tax professional.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent; a test in the code asserts there are no network calls.
