Common questions

How much redundancy pay am I entitled to in Australia?

Under the National Employment Standards it ranges from 4 weeks of base pay after 1 year of service up to 16 weeks at 9 years, then 12 weeks from 10 years. Check the Fair Work Ombudsman for the current table.

Do small businesses pay redundancy?

Not under the NES: an employer with fewer than 15 employees at the time of notice is exempt, though an award, enterprise agreement or contract may still require it.

Do casuals get redundancy pay?

No. Casual, fixed-term and task employees, apprentices and trainees are excluded from NES redundancy pay.

How much notice must be given?

1 to 4 weeks depending on years of service, plus 1 extra week for employees aged 45 or over with at least 2 years. Unworked notice is paid out.
